Rochester Teen Challenge is an in-resident, Christian program for individuals having life controlling problems stemming primarily from substance abuse, who desire a life change. The mission of Rochester Teen Challenge is actually twofold: First we endeavor to provide housing and immediate needs for those in crisis who come to us for help, and secondly, to provide a foundation in a person’s life through active participation in our program. We’ve been in operation since 1968, and we’re located at 1140 Norton St.
In our program, we concentrate on the Induction Phase , which is the first 3-6 months of the 12-14 month program. Our students are involved in daily and weekly activities including classes, chapels, work detail, recreation, and community involvement. Our curriculum concentrates on relevant life issues regarding why our students turned to drug use, and we address areas of inner hurt or lack of a foundation in their personal lives through student learning contracts aimed at these problem areas. In our structured environment our students are taught responsibility, attention to detail, and respect for peers and supervisors. We annually present substance abuse education at local high schools, as well as drug alert education at Orleans Correctional Facility. Summer outreach is also conducted in at-risk neighborhoods to young people.
